Background

The objective is to build a G36K replica. Out of the G36 family, I liked the K version the most. This variant can be seen in a bunch of movies such as Swordfish, Tomb Raider, T3, etc. I've acquired a fair amount of knowledge about the G36 system and I thought it wouldn't be too difficult to build a replica given my background. I started collecting extra parts in preparation of this project. I was pleasantly surprised when Tokyo Marui announced a release date for their G36C. I was anxious to find out whether real H&K accessories will fit on (it would save me a lot of trouble with building my own replica) so I had an associate of mine ship one as soon as it was released in Japan. When I received my G36C I wasted no time in getting the G36 parts to fit. Little did I know that I'd end up with quite possibly the first (and only, for a while) true G36K airsoft replica found anywhere.

Transformation

Early 2002. Bunch of parts waiting for a host. Either build a receiver from scratch, or wait for the inevitable release from Tokyo Marui sometime in the future.

NIB G36C, arrived 12/17/2002. (Tokyo Marui announced the release of G36C on 12/12/2002)

Modifications

Goals: Gun has to be compatible with original parts. No modifications allowed on H&K optic rails. Allowed to sacrificice one handguard if necessary, but ideally the receiver should be modified to accept any handguard (TM or H&K).

The modifications are actually fairly easy. The hard part is getting the parts (especially the stock)!

(Picture 5)
Discovery #1: Handguards won't fit without modifications. Marui fattened the belly of the handguard for the battery, that's why G36 handguards will not fit on. You have 2 options: Modify your gun's receiver (the recommended method), or grind open the handguard's lower fork (the handguard can be flexed to fit, but there will be a slight upward tilt to the handguard). Go down further for pics of receiver modifications.

(Picture 6)
Custom outerbarrels machined from aluminum tube stock. 2 lengths for K and CQB versions. Made different versions for different muzzle threads. If anyone needs one, I'll sell (or make one) for $35 + shipping (see Custom Parts page).

(Picture 7)
Outer barrels after being painted dark metallic gray to simulate parkerized finish (note black automotive primer gives the same look). I made one to thread on the XM-style flash hider just for fun. This particular XM-style flash hider also works as a loudener.

(Picture 8)
CQB-length (15.4" real-life) barrel with genuine H&K flash hider. Unlike the real gun, I don't have to worry about the gasblock! I did, however, make a fake gas cylinder so it doesn't look as "empty" inside the handguard.

(Picture 9)
K-length (12.5" real-life) barrel with genuine H&K 4-prong flash hider. Barrels are left natural for these pics.

(Picture 10)
The receiver dovetails needs to be modified via filing so the H&K optics will slide on.

Full-length G36 stock. Some modifications required :D

I will offer to do yours for a fee (see Custom Parts page). All I'll say is that it is somewhat tricky to do!

(Picture 14)
Folds and locks perfectly! The gun's ABS plastic receiver will break before the polymer stock or the handguard!

(Picture 15)
The recommended way to do the handguard fitment modification. I used a mill to make this modification, although you can do the same thing using a Dremel as
Wallace Lau (AirsoftOhio.com) had done for his KAC K-handguard fitment.

These pics from Wallace might give a better idea of what area to cut, as he has a better camera than I do :) Different profile cuts, but same concept.

Same as above, with rails, a KAC vertical grip, and a tactical light added. The grip is too far forward from ideal.

OAL is just a little shorter than 36"

(Picture 20)
Full-length barrel. This can be a one-piece barrel or a 2-piece. Interestingly, when you screw together the K + CQB outer barrels, you get just about full-length. Note the different sight rail.

Battery Storage

More battery space is available with G36/K handguards, but how you make use of the space is up to you. I only have limited experience to share in this matter but I did have success with SD packs (#607SD6) from onlybatterypacks.com. Jeff from onlybatterypacks.com recently told me they now have G36C-specific split battery packs available (their stock #607G, #608G, #1007G, #1008G), but I have not tried them. They should be perfect for these conversion projects.

(Picture 21)

(Picture 22)
No modifications required to the host gun.

(Picture 23)

This battery pack will fit just about perfectly in all of the forearms I've tried. In some cases (original style K forearm, for example) I might try separating the 2 columns of cells if I don't want the fit to be exactly snug (note: it is not necessary to do this). I would advise you to try their G36C packs, which reportedly have the 2 columns of cells separated for best fit - they just became recently available (3/21/03 or thereabouts).

I have also modified 9.6V mini packs to fit - you'll need to separate the 2 columns of cells and rewrap them.

Recommendations

If cost is a consideration, then the best recommendation I can give you is to wait for a Tokyo Marui release. If you can wait, Tokyo Marui will most likely release other G36 versions a year or two down the road. It will also be priced in the range of normal AEGs. The downside is the material will be as durable as any of the other stock Marui AEGs.

If you cannot wait and want to build your own, you can do so with the info and links given (and maybe with some parts from me). This is not a difficult conversion and anyone can do this even with basic tools (files, dremel). It will, however, cost a bit of money, but you get these nearly-indestructible polymer stock and handguard parts.

There are now some Hong Kong shops selling conversion kits. You can probably read about the quality of them on ASP or ASZ. I recommend that you do the conversion yourself instead with real Heckler & Koch parts for more durability. I can't justify paying similar prices on replica G36 parts from overseas when you can probably get real and more durable parts here in the USA for not much more.

Defining elements:

Forearm: You can order G36/K forearms from any authorized H&K dealer. You may also get airsoft-specific replicas.
Barrel extension: There are generic outer barrels threaded 14mmCCW to screw right on, but they may not be the appropriate length. You can also buy my custom made outer barrels.
Flash hider: Guarder makes a HK53 hider for the MC51. It is reasonably close and you can use that.
Full-length shoulder stock: I can only help you up to the extent of what I have on hand. Otherwise I really can't help you since I got all of mine from private sellers, and they are difficult even for me to get. They are not usually sold as replacement parts. Unfortunately, the conversion won't be fully authentic without this. I'm sure people can live with the original G36C stock, since most players might place a greater emphasis on the ability to accept a longer inner barrel and possibly more battery space.

Optics is not an issue since it is variable, so you can do whatever you like or keep the short sight rail.

These days you can get replica airsoft G36K conversions from various Hong Kong retailers. It is no longer necessary to use authentic parts for conversion.

You can get just about any H&K parts/optics from any authorized H&K dealer. Check www.hecklerkoch-usa.com

I cannot help you get parts. Please do not ask.
